This is an open-cast mine dating back to the time of Roman Hispania. It is situated in the Bierzo region (León), some 20 km from Ponferrada. It can be reached via the road from Orense to Carucedo.
Water was channelled via a system of canals from the rivers Eria and Cabrera, more than 100 km away. The reddish landscape is breathtaking, and the site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
