Cueva de Altamira, Santander

The cave has an irregular layout and is around 270 metres long. It consists of an entrance hall, a gallery and a side chamber. It contains some of the finest examples of prehistoric rock art.

The drawings are around 14,000 years old and depict bison, deer, wild boar, horses… They are painted in natural red ochre and outlined in black.

To ensure their preservation, the cave’s structure and paintings have been meticulously reproduced in the Neocueva at the Altamira Museum, using the same painting techniques. Visitors can thus admire in detail the great ceiling depicting the polychrome bison and visit the artists’ workshop, where the techniques used in this masterpiece of cave art are explained.
