The 13th-century castle is situated in a strategic location, overlooking the town. It has an elongated shape with a polygonal ground plan and was divided into three enclosures. In one of these stands the Torre Alfonsí, a rectangular tower comprising three storeys covered by Gothic vaults.
This tower was rebuilt in the 15th century. Another notable feature is the Torre del Espolón, which displays Mudejar influences. The castle has been restored as a themed venue dedicated to tourism and heritage interpretation under the name Fortaleza del Sol.
Thanks to this initiative, Lorca has been shortlisted for the European Commission’s EDEN (European Destinations of Excellence) programme, in recognition of its sustainable tourism initiative.
