This natural area, situated in the Serranía de Cuenca, is characterised by its curious rock formations, sculpted over centuries by the action of water, wind and ice. All this has shaped the rock into figures that resemble humans, objects and animals… sparking the visitor’s imagination.
It currently lies within the boundaries of the Serranía de Cuenca Natural Park and is situated just 28 kilometres from the city of Cuenca. The route through the Enchanted City is signposted, and many of the rock formations have signs indicating the names of the figures they resemble.
Visitors will immediately recognise the resemblance: the Boats, the Dog, the Sea of Stone, the Roman Bridge, the Seal, the Bears, the Slide, the Lovers of Teruel, the Mushrooms, the Convent, the Tortoise… The reason behind the existence of these whimsical shapes lies in the differing hardness and composition of the rocks.
The upper layer consists of grey, magnesium-rich limestone, which is more resistant to erosion than the reddish-coloured layer beneath it. The lower layer erodes more quickly than the upper one, giving rise to overhangs and cornices. The surroundings of the Enchanted City are also magical.
The vegetation consists of gall oaks, junipers, boxwoods, blackberries… Flocks of sheep graze in the surrounding area and you can smell the scent of rosemary and thyme.
