Tiryns may not be as famous as nearby Mycenae, but it is one of the best-preserved Mycenaean palace centres in Greece.
The hill was first settled in the Early Bronze Age, and its greatest prosperity came in the 14th and 13th centuries BC, when the palace and its massive walls were expanded into the citadel that still stands today.
Its most remarkable feature is the Cyclopean walls, built from enormous limestone blocks, up to 8 metres thick and 13 metres high: the ancient Greeks believed only the mythical Cyclopes could have built them.
