Fontanals Golf Club occupies the broad floor of La Cerdanya valley in the Catalan Pyrenees, where the golf course stretches to 6,450 metres (7,100 yards) across gently undulating terrain at 1,050 metres elevation. Spanish architect Ramón Espinosa García designed the par-72 layout in 1994, opening for play in June 1995 with a routing that incorporates traditional farming irrigation channels still regulated by gates across the property.
Experience Pyrenean mountain golf where length demands precision over a layout that tests distance control through thin altitude air. The Cerdanya valley's exceptional microclimate provides year-round playing conditions rarely found at this elevation.
The Fontanals project began in July 1993 with development of practice facilities, followed by the official 18-hole course inauguration on 27 June 1995. The original provisional clubhouse served until April 2003, when architect Enric Miralles's striking permanent structure opened.
Miralles died before project completion, with Josep Miàs completing the 2,500-square-metre building that integrates into the valley topography through organic design and traditional materials. The clubhouse received the 2004 AJAC Prize for Built Work and multiple architectural distinctions.
